The Benefits of Wood Cook Stoves

Sunday, February 28th, 2010
Peter Emerson asked:

Wood cook stoves have been used for hundreds of years. Before the advent of electricity, people cooked all of their food in wood cook stoves. Wood cook stoves are still used in many parts of the world, such as Central and South America. Some people still choose to use wood cook stoves to conserve energy or to get the great taste of food cooked over an open fire.

Wood cook stoves are large, elaborately designed structures. They need to include room for the wood, so they are bigger than gas or electric stoves. Wood cook stoves often look similar to conventional stoves. They have the oven at the bottom and cooking ranges on the top of the oven. Many wood cook stoves even have a hood area not unlike those found on conventional ovens that can be used for storage. Wood cook stoves are made of high quality cast iron for durability. Cast iron can with stand the heat produced by the fire and will not show external signs of wear and tear. The wood fire heats both the oven and the cooking ranges.

Wood cook stoves are great for energy conservation. Wood is less expensive than gas or electricity. People can find their own wood, or they can buy firewood from a store. Many people in rustic areas use wood cook stoves in order to remain completely self-sufficient. They can fuel the stove with wood from their property and not even have to use electricity.

Many people like the flavor of food cooked over wood. A large number of restaurants use wood cook stoves to prepare their food. Food cooked over wood has a more natural and distinct flavor than wood cooked with gas or electricity.

Wood cook stoves are a great alternative to conventional gas or electric stoves. They save energy and can make food taste much better.

The Benefits of Outdoor Wood Stoves

Saturday, February 27th, 2010
Peter Emerson asked:

Outdoor wood stoves use renewable energy, are less expensive than many other heating systems, and are safer than indoor wood stoves.

Outdoor wood stoves create heat by pumping water heated by the wood fire into the house through underground pipes. Once the hot water is inside the home, it is used in conjunction with the house’s internal heating system to heat the home. Outdoor wood stoves are compatible with most home heating systems, including forced air furnaces, radiant floor heating systems, radiant baseboard systems, and others. An indoor thermostat can control the temperature of the heat.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends that people use wood burning as a heat source whenever possible. Unlike fuels such as gasoline and coal, wood is a renewable resource. Wood fires are better for the environment because they do not produce excessive amounts of carbon dioxide like other fuels do. Large, unnatural amounts of carbon dioxide are believed to be responsible for the so-called greenhouse effect that is thought to cause global warming. Wood burns cleaner and is less expensive than other fuels as well.

Outdoor wood stoves save money in the long run. People who live in rustic areas can find and chop their own wood, meaning that they never have to pay for heating fuel. This can save hundreds of dollars a year over heating systems that rely on coal, gas, or electricity.

Having the stove outdoors eliminates the threat of an indoor fire. There is a chance that an indoor stove could cause a fire if someone operates it incorrectly. Outdoor wood stoves are entirely self-contained and separated from the elements, so that they can’t cause any fires.

Outdoor wood stoves are a good option for people who want to efficiently heat their homes inexpensively. Residents of rural areas should look into using an outdoor wood stove to heat their homes.

How to Install a Wood Stove

Saturday, February 20th, 2010
Peter Emerson asked:

“There are a number of factors that must be taken into account when installing a wood stove. It is important to make sure that the stove is set on a proper type of flooring. Wood stoves must have a stovepipe or chimney that channels smoke or exhaust outside. Finally, wood stoves must be a safe distance from all walls made of combustible material. Wood stove installation is a complicated process. It is usually a good idea to hire a professional for wood stove installation.

The first step of wood stove installation is to find a proper place for the stove. It is vital that the stove is not placed on flammable or combustible material like carpet or hardwood. Materials like ceramic tile and concrete are much better options since they do not catch fire easily. The law states that the stove must be placed in an area with at least 12 inches of acceptable material surrounding all sides of the stove except for the side used to load the wood, which must extend for 18 inches. This insures that it will not be possible for any sparks to land on wood or carpet and start a fire.

Not only should the wood stove be placed on appropriate flooring, it should not be closer than twelve inches from any combustible wall. The stove can be placed closer, if the wall is covered with a flame-resistant shield.

The stovepipe is one of the most important parts of a wood stove. The stovepipe should be made of double wall steel. This means that there is a larger stovepipe at least two inches larger around the pipe carrying the smoke. The stovepipe should not be closer than nine inches to an unprotected wall, and it should not pass through any combustible materials through the roof.

Wood stove installation is a complicated, time-consuming process. There are a number of trained installation experts who can save stove owners the trouble of installing it themselves.”

A Review of Popular Wood Stove Manufacturers

Peter Emerson asked:

There are several world renowned wood stove manufacturers that make a wide range of quality products. Some companies specialize in making traditional wood stoves while other make cutting edge stoves with new and technologically advanced features. Some major wood stove manufacturers are Country Flame, Morso, and Krog Iversen.

Country Flame has been making wood stoves since 1978. This Missouri based company makes a wide range of products including wood stoves, fireplaces, furnaces, and fireplace inserts. Country Flame introduced their wood stove as an economical option heating option for people who were hit hard by the recession. Now, Country Flame is on the cutting edge of wood stove manufacturers, winning the prestigious Vesta award in 2002 at the National HPBA Show.

The Danish company Morso has been a major wood stove manufacturer since 1853. Morso started off making fine cast iron wood stoves for people all over the world, and continue that tradition to day. Now, not only do Morso make some of the best traditional cast iron wood stoves on the market, they are also innovators, constantly coming up with new and original designs to appeal to buyers with a more modern taste. Some new designs look almost like artistically designed television sets. These models feature sleek, shiny iron construction and use the most advanced technology to distribute their warmth.

Another Danish company called Krog Iversen also makes world-class wood stoves. Krog Iversen was started in 1978 during the worldwide oil crisis. Founder Henning Krog Iversen realized that there was a great demand for heating systems that used fuels other than oil. He thought that traditional wood stoves would provide a good alternative to other expensive and inefficient heating systems. His idea paid off, and Krog Iversen is now a respected wood stove manufacturer, exporting its products to countries around the world.

There are countless other wood stove manufacturers around the world. With wood stoves providing economical and efficient heating, it is likely that demand will continue to increase, making room in the market for even more wood stove manufacturers.

Inserts "Wood" Improve any Fireplace

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010
Mick Burrows asked:

Wood burning fireplace inserts are basically a wood stove designed to fit into a conventional open fireplace. Like wood stoves, new inserts must be EPA certified, making them clean burning and highly efficient. These wood burning fireplace inserts are usually made from plate steel or cast iron and have glass doors so you can see the flames. The wood burning fireplace inserts either fit in the opening of the fireplace or protrude onto the hearth. The latter position is more efficient because the sides, top, and bottom provide additional radiant heat. The inserts often have blowers, which can significantly improve efficiency. Blowers are usually mounted in the front or along the sides of the insert. Some blowers are controlled manually, while others are regulated by a thermostat. Fireplace blowers are designed to distribute the air from your fireplace throughout your entire home.

In the past, most installers placed the wood burning fireplace inserts in the fireplace without any chimney connections. This method, in some cases, allowed creosote to build up inside the fireplace, presenting a potential fire hazard. To prevent this, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) now requires that inserts be installed with a positive connection to the chimney. Wood burning fireplace inserts must have a connector between the appliance outlet and the first section of the flue liner. This sends the smoke and gases up and out of the chimney more directly, minimizing combustible deposits that condense in the fireplace. Inserts are heavy, often weighing over 400 pounds. Since inserts need to be removed when the chimney is being cleaned and maintained, they can be awkward and heavy to handle. It is a job best left to a professional chimney sweep. In some cases, however, you do not have to remove the insert to clean the chimney. The wood burning fireplace inserts can stay in place during cleaning if you install a full relining collar, a stainless steel pipe that connects to the insert and goes to the top of the chimney. Good quality wood burning fireplace inserts usually costs between £750 and £1000. This price may be higher if you need to purchase accessories such as a blower, glass door, or catalytic combustor.
