How can I prevent a water pipes from freezing, with an electric outage and sub zero weather?

DR. E asked:

My old house had a gas range and wood burning stove to keep it warm during outages, This modern house I now live in, everything runs off electricity. What would be some suggestions to keep the pipes from bursting in the event of a big freeze/power outage of several days? how are those people in the midwest handleing it?
I don’t know how heat tape or heat lamps would work without electricity.Foam insulation may help for a short power outage but one that lasts over 2 days below freezing would be a tuffy, maybe an emergency generator would be the way to go.?

A series of questions about heating: wood stoves, pellet, furnace ect? Kansas City?

dt asked:

Would it be okay if I used a wood stove in Kansas City, MO.? Do people use them here?

What is better a pellet stove or a wood stove?

What have been done to modern wood stoves that make them better? What is a catalytic? I am asking this to know what to look for because I am thinking about buying used and want to know if I can modify an old one myself. Is there a big difference between old and new?

Are masonry stoves and oil stoves or whatever they’re called any good?

If I run a vent pipe out my basement windows does it have to reach above my roof?

Is it important to have a firebrick lining in a wood stove and why? What is the best material to have your stove made out of iron? Is it better for it to be thick? And are they hot to the touch?

Lastly, as for whole house furnaces that run into vents what is better and will save energy and how much gas or electric? And what is an electric heat pump as opposed to a normal furnace?

what kind of professional should I call to help me decide if I have enough room in my chimney to add my wood stove?

Should i block off my chimney for putting in an electric fire?

We currently have an open fire and we have just excavated the space to make it bigger for a wood burning stove. We can’t afford that at the moment though so were wanting to put an electric stove (looks like wood burner) in the open space into the fireplace. However i don’t want all the heat going up the chimney. Also we live in a stair so the chimney is shared with 6 other houses so not sure what to do about the top of the chimney as most advice says you need to cap the top as well.
Any suggestions?

What cuts wood better than a sawzall?

Thursday, February 25th, 2010
Braga asked:

My dad cuts alot of wood because he has a wood stove which heats his entire house. I have NO idea what to get him for his birthday and i got less than a month. Maybe something for cutting wood? He said he doesnt like chainsaws because you have to sharpen the chain often or buy new ones. He doesnt like an axe because he has carpal tunnel and who likes swinging an axe cutting wood for 3 hours straight? He said he loves his sawzall because its real easy cutting wood and u dont have to sharpen the blade every hour. Is there anything better than that? Because he has carpal tunnel, it sometimes puts a strain on his wrist with all the vibration from the sawzall. What can i get him? Any reccommendations with personal experience would be great! Thanks
