What cuts wood better than a sawzall?
Braga asked:
My dad cuts alot of wood because he has a wood stove which heats his entire house. I have NO idea what to get him for his birthday and i got less than a month. Maybe something for cutting wood? He said he doesnt like chainsaws because you have to sharpen the chain often or buy new ones. He doesnt like an axe because he has carpal tunnel and who likes swinging an axe cutting wood for 3 hours straight? He said he loves his sawzall because its real easy cutting wood and u dont have to sharpen the blade every hour. Is there anything better than that? Because he has carpal tunnel, it sometimes puts a strain on his wrist with all the vibration from the sawzall. What can i get him? Any reccommendations with personal experience would be great! Thanks

these saws work great….nothing to replace them…get him more blades, good pack will run u about $18.00 for a 12 pack…how about a good pair of gloves for the saw…..maybe a tote bag for the wood after he cuts it……..

Depends on the size wood he cutting, but an 8 1/2 or 10in circular saw will also do the trick with far less vibration.

An electric chain saw with a spare chain and an electric chain sharpener would be the best all round solution. Next the band saw will put less strain on the muscles than a sawzall but it is heavier. If you use a longer chain saw, it does not need to be sharpened as often. I’ve used chainsaws for nearly 50 years and I usually sharpen the chain every 3-4 days of use on fir, spruce, or alder. A large tooth saw and a blade at least 18″ will lessen the sharpening time, but this will be a gas unit. The newer gas chainsaws for heavy home use are much better and lighter than the ones I first used in the 50’s. Hope this helps.

I have cut Allot of wood to heat our home and for sale. I cannot imagine cutting any amount of wood with a sawzall. Talk about having too much time on your hands. Ryobie makes a cordless chainsaw that is OK for light work.A gas saw is really the only way to go. Electric saws are more dangerous for the weekend users because they start at maximum torque…be careful with them. As for a gift…how about a large box of fat wood. Fat wood is great for starting the fire and it imparts a nice smell into the home.

You already have plenty of advice on saws. I would look into a good pair of gloves (Mechanix or similar brand) there are several types of glove available, and one of them is padded in a way to help reduce shock to hand and wrist easing carpal tunnel.
As for my favorite saw? I like good ol’ fashion bow saws.

Buy the chainsaw you like and spend a weekend a month with dad and you help cut the wood with him…now how nice is that for your dad?

You don’t say what size wood he is cutting, but I just bought a Dewalt 18 volt cordless reciprocating saw that I used to clean up a bunch of large limbs(up to 9in.) from a wind storm.I used a heavy pruning blade and it went through that green wood like butter. The vibration was minimal and after almost 2 hours(I mean A LOT of limbs) I had nowhere near the fatigue I usually feel after using a gas chainsaw.I used to have an electric chainsaw and the vibration was not very bad on it either, but I got tired of dragging the cord around and like you said sharpening the chain is a pain plus I use the other saw for a lot of other projects. If you are interested this was one of the best deals I found.http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_200318123_200318123

It sound like you have to get him new blades for his sawzall.
There is a blade called the Axe made from Milwaukee. The blade last longer and it cost a little more. They also make one called the torch for cutting metal. I had a torch blade on my sawzall for three years and it still cuts like butter.
Good luck
